What Next For Darknet Markets?
Without these policies, a pervasive digitalization of the drug trade can occur. The primary cost of allowing marketplaces to grow is the probable increase in the consumption of illegal drugs due to convenience for consumers and facilitated cooperation between suppliers. This cost must be weighed against the potential benefits, including a higher quality of drugs, decreased potential violence, and the incentives for a large marketplace to self-regulate. Transactions on Hydra were conducted in cryptocurrency and Hydra’s operators charged a commission for every transaction conducted on Hydra.
Understanding the Darknet Market
The darknet market is a unique and complex part of the internet that operates in the shadows of the web. This term refers to a collection of online marketplaces that are hosted on the dark web, which is not indexed by traditional search engines.
In 2013, the FBI shut down a dark web marketplace called Silk Road, founded by a young man in Texas named Ross Ulbricht. Silk Road operated in a similar way — allowing users to buy illicit goods and services and rate and review each vendors’ products. In 2015, Ulbricht was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for running the underground narcotics website. U.S. law enforcement agents also used Hydra’s “Bitcoin Bank Mixer” to launder money in November 2021. The indictment further explains how Hydra vendors offered fake identifications, including passports and driver’s licenses, and hacking services.
He was arrested on a provisional arrest warrant by Austrian authorities on Nov. 2, 2022. Police searched his residence and vehicle and seized electronic devices and cash. The U.S. Department of Justice announced charges Friday against Milomir Desnica, 33, who’s a citizen of both Croatia and Serbia.
What is the Darknet Market?
- Users do not choose to migrate to marketplaces that have fewer common users than the third-ranked marketplace.
- These markets are essentially online black markets that allow users to buy and sell illegal goods and services using cryptocurrencies.
- Both Hydra itself and its vendors also offered money laundering services, including a tightly-controlled and regimented infrastructure allowing vendors and other cybercriminals to convert cryptocurrency into Russian rubles using a few pre-approved services.
- Vendor ratings and reviews were featured prominently on the platform, according to the indictment.
- Dark0de also features a coin mixer and coin exchange + Dead Drop functionalities.
The two charts below show which markets Hydra’s previous counterparties used the most in both of those two time periods. The color of the lines show the former Hydra users’ category of activity and the thickness of the lines show the proportion of their activity flowing to new markets after Hydra was shut down. The darknet market provides a platform for various goods and services, often including products that may be illegal or controversial. Users access these markets through specific software that anonymizes their identity, such as Tor. The nature of these transactions can significantly vary.
Classification performance was generally good, but we observed that six categories showed low (Cosmetics, Tobacco, Other accessories, Other) or very low (Pharmaceuticals, Services) categorization performance. Since low performances are only present with classes exhibiting few listings in the test set, most of the listings are well categorized, which is also reflected in the weighted performance scores (Table 3). An exception was for the category “Other”, which was also less well categorized despite containing more listings than the other low-performing categories. The category “Other” often contained custom orders, with product titles such as “custom [customer name]”, complicating the annotation process. Since the classifier received additional information from the product description, which was not available to the annotators, it is possible that mismatches between the annotations and product descriptions led to more misclassifications in the category “Other”. For example, some custom orders might have similar descriptions as other counterfeits.
Key Features of the Darknet Market
- Anonymity: Users can browse and transact without revealing their identities.
- Variety of Goods: From illicit drugs and weapons to counterfeit documents and hacking services.
- Cryptocurrency: Most transactions occur using cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, which provide an added layer of anonymity.
- Escrow Systems: Many markets employ an escrow system to bolster trust between buyers and sellers.
How to Access the Darknet Market
Accessing a darknet market involves several steps:
As we detail below, Flashpoint observed a considerable decrease in the volume of money being handled by crypto wallets linked to dark web markets. And, as we’ve previously reported, new markets have aggressively vied to take Hydra’s place—but U.S. government sanctions have so far prevented any from reaching its level in terms of breadth, reputation, and trust. As a result, threat actors have migrated elsewhere, including to forums like “RuTor,” decentralized Telegram-based shops, and even switching to offline transactions for physical commodities like narcotics. There is direct evidence that two of the three markets in question offer money laundering services. Like the vast majority of all darknet market users, former Hydra counterparties across all categories — both retail drug buyers and criminal users — transacted almost exclusively with OMG during the OMG dominance period. In the post-OMG dominance period, OMG retained a number of those former Hydra counterparties, but lost a significant share of their illicit activity to the other two markets across all categories.
Mixing services are paid services that allow customers to send bitcoin to designated recipients by concealing the source or owner of the bitcoin. “Hydra’s money laundering features were so in-demand that some users would set up shell vendor accounts for the express purpose of running money through Hydra’s bitcoin wallets as a laundering technique,” the DoJ said. Another report by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in the United Kingdom shows a different picture of IP and counterfeit-affected product categories (IP Crime Group, 2015). The report summarizes independently reported IP crimes through CrimestoppersFootnote 11 and investigations of counterfeits by Trading Standards (TS)Footnote 12 between 2014 and 2015. The top five reported and investigated IP crimes were Tobacco, optical media, clothing, alcohol, and footwear. Although watches, jewelry, cosmetics, and electronics were also within the top 17 affected categories, they seem to be less prominent than on dark markets and attracted fewer investigations by TS (Table 5).
To do this, we first identified 30 darknet markets advertising stolen data products. If you ignore the markets that only allow for the sale of illicit drugs, there are still 32 darknet markets currently operating! In the last year, it seems like new markets are opening for business every month, each promising better security, or trying to make it big with a new gimmick. We’ve noticed an increasing number of markets also hosting a forum section on their website, encouraging product and vendor reviews, as well as generating discussion around various fraud “methods”. “The Department of Justice will not allow darknet markets and cryptocurrency to be a safe haven for money laundering and the sale of hacking tools and services,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said.
